Introduction After being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944, Mr. Braun was sent to Germany as an infantry replacement. At the last minute he was transferred to the 165th Combat Photographic Company. “My first day of combat made me absolutely sick,” Mr. Braun recalled. “As the war dragged on, I gradually adjusted to the horror of living in this environment to the point where I could eat and sleep.” His company suffered a 76-percent casualty rate.
